Feinherb | Range | Dohlmühle
Unregulated German term for wines that are off-dry. Feinherb is often used in place of the less popular designation halbtrocken, as well as for wines that are slightly sweeter than regulations dictate for halbtrockens.
Off-dry wines are very popular with wine lovers in Germany, so winemakers are increasingly using the term “off-dry” as an indication of taste and writing it on the label. The term “fine herb” is not legally defined. That’s why the question arises: What exactly does the term off-dry wine mean? If you take a closer look at the term, you could guess that the wine tastes “tart”. A bit misleading, because off-dry wine is by no means “tart”. While the residual sugar content ranges from dry , semi-dry , semi-sweet and sweet is legally defined, off-dry wines are not legally defined. What is clear is that they are neither dry nor sweet in taste. Every winemaker decides differently whether they are between dry and sweet, i.e. more in the semi-dry range, or between semi-dry and sweet. If you are unsure, the best thing to do is simply ask.
