Tenuta CastelGiocondo | Range | Marchesi Frescobaldi
A CastelGiocondo estate
Ancient, majestic and dominant
A stronghold full of charm and history
Dominated by the ancient tower and the small medieval village. South-west of Montalcino, Tenuta CastelGiocondo is located at an altitude of approximately 300 metres, an ideal terroir for the production of Sangiovese.
The village of Castelgiocondo dominates the historic Frescobaldi estate in Montalcino from above, an ancient fortress built in 1100 to defend the road that led from the sea to Siena. The property is one of the first four from which the production of Brunello di Montalcino began in 1800 and its historical importance is demonstrated by the figure of the knight shown on the labels of Castelgiocondo wines, taken from a famous fresco by the Sienese painter Simone Martini. The artist painted Guidoriccio da Fogliano, commander of the Siena troops, who led the attack on the Montemassi castle. A historical coincidence which saw, at the same time as the knight’s exploits, the Frescobaldis begin their centuries-old adventure in the world of wine.
